Northern Red-bellied Snake

Commonly Confused Native Species:

 

IDENTIFICATION

 

Size:                  A small sized snake measuring 8 to 11.5 inches in

                           length.

 

Color:                Brown or gray dorsum with a red to orange venter. Three

                           light yellow spots appear just behind the head.  Keeled

                           scales.            

 

Behavior:         Occasionally they will flatten out their bodies. They may

                           open their mouths slightly curling their supralabial scales

                           as a defense from predators. When handled they emit an

                           unpleasant smelling musk, very docile, does not bite. 

 

Habitat:             A variety of higher elevation habitats, from forests to open

                           canopy fields.
