Northern Spring Salamander

IDENTIFICATION

 

Size:                  A robust and large sized salamander measuring 5 to 7.5

                           inches in length with a distinctly laterally flattened tail.

 

Color:                The dorsum is orange to salmon in coloration with a

                           reticulated light brown pattern. The venter is a light

                           translucent white.           

 

Behavior:         Produces a noxious skin secretion when threatened.

                           May posture with its head tucked beneath its tail when in

                           danger.  Often flees rapidly easily escaping capture.        

 

Habitat:            Cold, spring fed streams in the northern reaches of

                           Connecticut.
