IDENTIFICATION

 

Size:                   A larger salamander measuring 4.3 to 6 inches in

                            length with a cylindrical tail. 

 

Color:                 The dorsum is black with white speckles. 

                            The venter is colored  black.  

 

Behavior:           When handled roughly a slimy and sticky emission is

                             secreted from the tail.

 

Habitat:              Slimy salamanders are found in old growth forest and

                             associated rocky slopes in western Connecticut.
